▷ Vice Minister Lee Hohyeon of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment holds bilateral talks with the Undersecretary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Italy
▷ Exploring expanded cooperation between the two countries in areas such as energy transition, the circular economy, and nuclear power
As a follow-up to the summit held in Seoul (January 19, 2026), Korea and Italy are expected to further specify measures for energy transition and supply chain cooperation, paving the way for strengthened energy security and enhanced competitiveness of related industries in both countries.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE, Minister Kim Sungwhan) announced that on the morning of February 11, Second Vice Minister Lee Hohyeon of the MCEE will hold a meeting with Maria Tripodi, Undersecretary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, at Dalgaebi (located in Jung-gu, Seoul).
This meeting is a follow-up to the bilateral summit held on January 19 and will focus on discussing cooperation measures in the areas of energy transition and the circular economy.
This meeting is significant as it marks the first high-level consultation aimed at exploring concrete policy cooperation and project linkages in areas such as climate crisis response and energy transition, building on the shared understanding of bilateral cooperation established at the summit.
Both countries share the view that cooperation is necessary to achieve energy security and carbon neutrality simultaneously, and, in light of the instability of the international environment, they are also expected to emphasize the need to strengthen international cooperation, including diversification of energy supply chains.
They will also share information on the background behind Italy’s recent consideration of introducing nuclear power, despite having declared a nuclear phase-out in 1986. In addition, they will discuss future directions for cooperation on ensuring grid flexibility for energy transition and stable power supply through a balanced power mix of renewable energy and nuclear power.
Second Vice Minister Lee Hohyeon stated, “This meeting is an important opportunity to translate the cooperation directions agreed upon at the bilateral summit into concrete policies and industrial collaboration.” He added, “Based on the technological capabilities and experience of both countries, we will expand practical public-private cooperation and generate tangible outcomes that contribute to the climate and energy goals of the international community.”
