To protect water quality and prevent pollution accidents, a 24-hour water quality telemetering system will be constructed in four main river water supply facilities. Lee Suk-hyun, the Chairman of the Environmental Management Corporation, said until the year 2005, he plans to expand the installation of the water quality telemetering systems all across the country.

The water telemetering system is a monitoring device which constantly detects the pollutants that flow into lakes and rivers. It is installed to prevent and quickly cope with the water contamination accidents by sending out a warning signal to the related facilities.

At present, there are 22 systems installed and operated in 4 main river basins, including the newly installed system in the upstream of Namhangang; and by the year 2005, there will be 34 more systems installed.

If the plan goes smoothly, the damage caused by water contamination accidents will be minimized, and by using the monitored data, it will be possible to come up with a qualitative analysis of the regional pollutants that can be used as a significant data for making environmental policies.
