Korea-Turkiye Clean Energy Cooperation: Ministers Discuss Expanding Collaboration

▷ Follow-up measures to last November’s Korea-Turkiye summit, with cooperation made concrete through a ministerial meeting

▷ Energy cooperation across clean energy, nuclear power and SMRs, energy efficiency, and power grids

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE, Minister Kim Sunghwan) announced that on February 25 it will hold talks in Seoul with Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkiye, to discuss cooperation measures across the overall energy transition.

This meeting will serve to discuss follow-up cooperation measures following the Korea-Turkiye summit held last November and to explore concrete cooperation outcomes ahead of the Turkish President’s future visit to Korea. It is expected to focus on comprehensive energy cooperation measures encompassing renewable energy, power grids, and nuclear power plants, including small modular reactors (SMRs).

Turkiye is pursuing power grid modernization in response to the expansion of renewable energy and rising electricity demand. The two countries plan to share policies for expanding the deployment of renewable energy such as wind and solar power, and to discuss ways to link the expansion of power generation facilities with grid stabilization. Accordingly, the potential for cooperation between companies of the two countries has been raised in areas such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission infrastructure and grid operation technologies.

Nuclear power and SMRs are also key agenda items. Turkiye is considering the construction of new nuclear power plants and the introduction of SMRs, while Korea is pursuing the development of its own innovative SMRs alongside its extensive experience in building large-scale nuclear power plants. The two countries also plan to discuss measures to expand practical cooperation, including technological collaboration, workforce training, and supply chain partnerships.

Minister Kim Sunghwan of the MCEE stated, “An energy strategy that balances the expansion of renewable energy, the stabilization of power grids, and the use of nuclear power is a key task for achieving both carbon neutrality and energy security.” He added, “This ministerial meeting will serve as an opportunity to elevate the strategic energy partnership between our two countries to the next level.”
