Ministry of Environment established a plan for constructing and managing sewage systems at the upper streams of 15 multi-purpose dams.

At the upper streams of the dams, 82 sewage works will be built, treating 361 thousand tons of sewage a day by 2005. At present, 28 sewage works are treating 205 thousand tons a day, and the sewage treatment rate is only 27% at these areas. The sewage treatment rate will be raised to 48% when the construction of sewage systems are completed in 2005.

The plan includes various measures to improve sewage treatment in upper stream of the dams. For one of the measures, local governments should alter the basic sewage systems plans before establishing dam construction plans in order to prevent shortage of sewage treatment facilities.

Three sewage management centers (tentative) at the upper stream of Yongdam, Tamjin and Namgang dams will be constructed and equipped with automatic control networks. Sewage works will be systematically managed at these management centers according to the stream they locate. For example, a sewage work located near Tamjin River will be managed by Tamjin sewage management center.

Ministry of Environment will further discuss and improve this plan with relevant local governments and Environment Management Corporation.
