MOE launches pilot emission reduction project on diesel vehicles

Having 6 months left before the enforcement of the『Special Act on Seoul Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement』the Ministry of Environment launches pilot emission reduction project on government owned diesel vehicles starting in June 2004. The project will entail three methods of emission reduction: installation of diesel particulate filter (DPF), installation of diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), and remodeling diesel-powered vehicles to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Considering the severity of vehicle-borne pollution, which in case of particulate matters amount for 67% of the total emission exhaust in Seoul metropolitan region, the pilot project aims to control vehicle emissions first hand.

The cities of Seoul, Incheon and Kyunggi, and the Ministry of Environment will place totaling of 3,068 vehicles on pilot operation, which will comprise 1,450 vehicle remodeling, 520 DPF installation, and 1,098 DOC installation. The Ministry of Environment will take charge of conducting necessary operations on 1,218 government owned vehicles. (300 vehicle remodeling, 320 DPF installation and 598 DOC installation)

The total project budget is estimated at 93 billion Korean won, and the government will cover 100% of the operational costs. Furthermore, with the enforcement of the Special Act in 2005, the MoE will expand the scope of the project to include 520,000 industrial vehicles by 2012.
