Canada's New Federal Regulations to Reduce Toxic Substances

The Government of Canada announced the new regulations aiming at 65% decrease in a use of trichlorechylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PERC) by 2007. TCE and PERC are widely used for drycleaning, soil cleaning, and manufacturing processes such as painting, plating, repair or product assembly. By industry, those substances are used in automobile, auto parts, aerospace, furniture, appliances, primary metals and electronics.

The new regulations are a successful model of the Government of Canada's environmental works, led by its continuing collaboration with provinces, industries, and stakeholders. With this, the new environmental technologies and clean production methods will further progress along with the development of alternative substances.
