Beginning from June 1st, a new recycling center for old household electronic appliances will go into operation, facilitating the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility System(EPR) and promoting more environmentally friendly lifestyles.

With around 500 people, including Minister of Environment Han Myeong Sook and Sohn Hak Kyu, the Governor of Gyeonggi province participating, a ceremony in celebration of the opening of the "Metropolitan Recycling Center for Electronic Appliances", as the it's called, was held on May 30th.

The Association of Electronic Environment, which is in charge of the recycling of electronic wastes of the major electronic companies, built a new recycling center for discarding old electronic appliances. The decision to build such a center was made to facilitate the implementation of the EPR System, which went into full effect from the beginning of this year. Major electronic companies in Korea, such as LG, Samsung and Daewoo jointly invested about 20 billion won in building the center.

As the recycling center goes into operation from June 1st, there will be a drastic reduction in the amount of electronic wastes nationwide, as well as annual production of 33,000 tons of raw materials. Furthermore, this will contribute to overcoming the shortage of resources and development of new industries in Korea.
